In this sermon, Rev. Kent Compton explores 2 Corinthians 12, focusing on Paul's "thorn in the flesh" and God's response: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." He explains that Paul's boasting in his weaknesses, rather than his glorious visions, serves as a model for believers. This thorn, a "messenger of Satan," was divinely allowed to prevent Paul from becoming conceited due to his extraordinary revelations, highlighting God's commitment to humbling His servants. Rev. Compton emphasizes that God's purpose in allowing such afflictions is to bring us to a deeper union with Christ, a wisdom not found in prosperity.
Rev. Compton suggests that the undefined nature of Paul's thorn allows all believers to identify with his struggle, whether it be physical, spiritual, financial, or emotional. He challenges the common human tendency to stew in bitterness or confusion when facing unexpected hardships, contrasting it with Paul's faith-filled perspective that sees God's goodness and sovereign control in all circumstances. The core message is that God's grace abounds even more where sin and weakness are prevalent, enabling believers to remain content and even rejoice in their struggles.
The sermon concludes by stressing that God's higher purposes are often realized through our weaknesses. Rev. Compton illustrates this with biblical examples like Gideon, Abraham and Sarah, and modern figures like Joni Eareckson Tada and Amy Carmichael, all of whom experienced God's power and glory most profoundly in their limitations. He encourages listeners to embrace a posture of humble submission, recognizing that our lives are not about our own strength or accomplishments, but about the exaltation of Christ's name, finding contentment in weakness for His sake and His glory.
