Two Families and You

July 20, 2025 Pastor: Rev. Dr. Jack Whitock Series: Non-series

Topic: The Church Passage: Luke 8:19–21

This sermon, drawing from Luke 8:19-21, explores the intersection of two types of families: the natural family and the spiritual family. The speaker defines the "natural family" as one's birth or adoptive family, noting its institution by God in Genesis and its commendation in Scripture. While families are designed for nurture, instruction, and the passing of wisdom, the sermon realistically acknowledges that natural families, existing in a fallen world, can also be places of conflict, trauma, and even abuse, as seen in biblical examples like Jacob's family. The speaker also highlights an instinctive human loyalty to the natural family, referencing the proverb "blood is thicker than water".

The sermon then transitions to the concept of the "spiritual family," emphasizing that Jesus's declaration, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it," defines this family. This statement is presented not as a rejection of Jesus's natural family, but as a "living parable" to illustrate the greater, eternal family forged by faith in Him. The speaker explains that membership in this spiritual family comes through hearing and believing Jesus's word, which is the "entry door into the kingdom through discipleship". Obedience flows from this belief and love for the Savior, not as a means of salvation, but as a response to it.

A significant portion of the sermon uses the parable of a cat and a pig in a mud hole to illustrate the nature of a disciple's obedience versus a non-believer's delight in sin. A cat, even if it falls into mud, instinctively seeks to clean itself, symbolizing a Christian who, despite sinning, desires to repent and be cleansed. In contrast, a pig delights in the mud and stays there, representing someone who feels no remorse or guilt for sin. This parable clarifies that Christian obedience is an ongoing striving, recognizing one's imperfections and Jesus as the perfect Savior.

Finally, the sermon concludes with Jesus's "benediction" for those who belong to the spiritual family: "You are like my own mother. You are my mother and you're my brother. You're my disciple. You're my sister. You're my real family". This highlights the profound closeness and familiarity believers share with Christ. The spiritual family, formed by the blood of Jesus, is described as "thicker of the covenant than all the water of men," signifying its eternal and paramount importance over the natural family. The ultimate message is to hear, believe, and obey Jesus to become part of this spiritual family of God.
