Rev. Kent Compton’s sermon on Zechariah 3 is a powerful exposition of the High Priest Joshua's vision, centering on the themes of satanic accusation, divine cleansing, and substitutionary righteousness. Rev. Compton opens by likening the High Priest Joshua's experience—standing before the Angel of the Lord while Satan accuses him—to the internal struggles faced by believers, often expressed through anxiety or dreams of being unprepared. Joshua’s identity as the High Priest makes him the representative of all the people, and his "filthy garments" symbolize the sin and guilt of the entire nation of Israel.
The core of the sermon focuses on the dramatic confrontation between Satan and the Angel of the Lord (identified as Christ). Rev. Compton emphasizes that when Satan accuses Joshua, Joshua remains silent; he has no defense to offer. It is the Lord Himself who answers the accuser, silencing Satan by referring to Israel as a "brand plucked from the fire." This phrase illustrates that God’s justification of the sinner is not based on the sinner's merit but on God’s sovereign grace and predetermined plan. The command to strip Joshua of his filthy garments and clothe him with rich robes is the central act of substitution, signifying the removal of sin and the imputation of Christ’s perfect righteousness.
Finally, Rev. Compton drives home the application of this vision to every Christian. He asserts that the greatest way a believer can glorify God is not through acts of service or outward sacrifice, but by simply saying, "I believe in your Son." When the believer's conscience is troubled by the devil's accusations, they are called to look away from their own sin and cast their eyes upon Jesus, their Advocate. The knowledge that Jesus has answered for them and provided the perfect, pure garments of righteousness brings peace and security, enabling the believer to stand blameless and rejoice in the sufficiency of Christ's work.
